The Community Project Ethiopia

In partnership with Twende Solar and The Community Project: Ethiopia, this recent solar project not only lit up the school, but also brought hope to the community of Debre Birhan, Ethiopia. The 8.64 kW system consisted of IronRidge – An Enstall Company racking materials, 24 Heliene modules and battery storage for off-grid functionality.

Three delegates from Ethiopia received specialized solar training in Portland, where they learned the skills necessary to install the panels with remote assistance. These individuals include Dr. Abiyou Tilahun, who leads the school’s STEM program and garden; Fikeremariam Negash, the project manager overseeing construction at Wogagen School; and Prof. Gizaw Tilaye, who shares a passion for rural solar empowerment and leads similar initiatives at Debre Birhan Polytechnic College.

Together, we have created a beacon of opportunity to inspire future generations. The K-8 school, which is expected to serve 1,200 students when completed, will provide a platform for children and families to expand their knowledge, learn first-hand agricultural and energy conservation techniques, develop analytical thinking skills, and cultivate the ability to lead successful, contributing lives.

Special recognition is due to David Denenberg, Territory Manager, and Robin Swanhuyser for spearheading this collaboration with Empowers and the proposed donation of Enstall’s IronRidge shelving materials for installation. Micro-enterprise initiatives are also being developed to support the school, including activities such as solar battery replacement, repairs, and book purchases.
